Is three to four ten minute burst of exercise a day as effective as one 40 minute session?

I read that if you havent time or energy to exercise intensley for 40 minutes a day its just as effective to break it up into ten munite bursts of intense exercise.
Answer:
I'm going to be a little harsh here, because this is a frivolous question, whether you realize it or not. If you're talking about real, elevate your heart rate, sweating buckets, EFFECTIVE exercise, the answer is no. It takes me a good 15 minutes to get my heartrate up to where it needs to be to run, cycle, or swim comfortably with any sort of intensity. That's documented fact, learned over thousands of hours running, racing, training with a heart rate monitor.You might be younger, and able to get warmed up a LITTLE faster, but I can guarantee, not by much. Supposing you just ran as hard as you could for ten minutes, no warmup at all, 4 times a day, then what? Whatever else you have to do during the day better be by yourself, because you're going to smell really bad. If you shower and cleanup after each 10 minute session, you're wasting astronomical amounts of time compared to doing it all at once. On the other hand, if you're talking about the nonsense that passes for exercise with a lot of people these days, like dork walking, prancing around to exercise videos, diddling with teeny hand weights, or sitting on weight machines at the Y yapping with your friends and doing a couple reps now and again, then YES its just as effective to do 10 minutes as 40 because ITS NOT EFFECTIVE AT ALL. If this is you, don't dare ask why you're not losing weight or looking like a supermodel when you've been doing "40 minutes of exercise" every day for a whole 2 weeks!!!!

for the cardiac benefits of exercise - yesfor fat burning benefits of exercise - no, you get less "bang for your buck" than the old standard minimum of 20 minutes at a time to burn fat, but it is better than nothing
I remember reading somewhere that short burst as you describe are better. Think it was because it was more natural. Like when a caveman had to run from danger. Then rest.. Then run some more for dinner.
